CONTEXT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In India, women face a high risk of exploitation and violence. Although sexual offence laws were tightened in 2013, protection remains insufficient, and sexual abuse remains a widespread issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the overall situation for women in Indian society has improved and legal protections have become stricter, human trafficking and sexual violence remain largely taboo topics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

PREVENTION THROUGH EDUCATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the awareness campaign, a team of four regularly conducts educational activities in the region. They visit schools, community gatherings, and at-risk individuals to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking and temple prostitution, while also presenting alternatives and available protection measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project team is well connected within the region and collaborates closely with local authorities, a specialised police unit and organisations that support affected individuals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Building trust with sensitivity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The awareness campaign requires staff to approach their work with great sensitivity. Although violence against women, abuse and exploitation are widespread, these issues remain deeply taboo. Such violence often occurs in secrecy and is either unrecognised or tacitly tolerated by large parts of society. Nevertheless, Malini*, a long-standing member of the awarness campaign team, is convinced that persistence and patience make a difference: \u00abIt does not happen overnight that a woman can break free from human trafficking or a difficult family situation \u2013 it often takes months. But one thing is certain: once women are informed and educated, once they gain access to education, they will fight back. They will stand up for the fact that others do not have the right to decide over their lives. Knowledge and education are the key that makes all the difference.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n
